RUAS "Streets"
Release 23 March 2009 LISBOARIUM & TOURISTS
Streets of Life, Streets of the Heart, Streets of the Saudade, Streets of Love and of Absence, Streets of all the Streets. Those of Fate and Fado. We all take streets until we reach the last turning. And these places of passing by, of meetings and goodbyes, all these streets of all the cities in the world are traversed by the vulnerable and indefatigable humans that we are, trying to live our lives and spread jam on our hearts.
LISBOARIUM (CD1)
Lisboarium was born in the Bouffes du Nord theatre in Paris, a city where I came to settle in 2005. Waiting for the Saudade to attack, I dream of Lisbon from a distance... Lisborarium is an oniric and imaginary voyage through the streets of Lisbon, its neighbourhoods and its music, not only "Fado" but also the "Marchas de Lisboa" and the "Morrna". The sounds of Lisbon with the richness of its mixture of cultures and its peripheral European perch. Lisboarium is a dream where everything is possible, even a French fado written by one of the greatest living poets in Portugal, Vasco Graça Moura. The ships, the seagulls, the church bells of Lisbon. Lisbon and its poets, Lisbon and its music, Lisbon and its special luminosity... Lisbon and its men in gabardine, black umbrellas and moustaches, its short-legged dogs. Would you like to dream with me this evening? Careful, the beautiful paving stones of Lisbon are slippery...
&TOURISTS (CD2)
The Tourists are artists from other streets in the world, other cultures, but I think they have a "fado" soul. Some of them would certainly have sung the Fado if they had been born in Portugal. Through their tragic relationship with life, present in their music and in their work, through an existential exhaustion made of extreme emotion, of artistic licence and solitude. Some met with a tragic end but all are and remain alive within us. My guests belong to this tribe of artists who, like me, stare alone right into the eyes of Fate.

Mísia conceived this album as a Pandora's Box. Originating from years of wandering and tumultuous love affairs, Drama Box is a preciously personal yet a temperate work. There is of course Fado, but the music is freed from clichés. Further more and for the first time, there are echoes from the world of Mísia's Spanish mother: timeless Boleros and Tangos. Mísia's songs reveal her as a determined but mischievous woman, faithful but free, sensitive yet reckless. Contributed to this album have also Fanny Ardant, Maria de Medeiros, Ute Lemper, Carmen Moura and Miranda Richardson.
Télérama FFF award, France Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Germany Presented at the théâtre des Champs Elysées, Paris
Canto is an unheard novelty because it was inspired by the instrumental music of the composer and guitarist Carlos Paredes. The result is an encounter of unlike artistic languages. The poetry is by Vasco Graça Moura, Sérgio Godinho and Pedro Tamen. Mísia's usual Fado guitarists and her Portuguese violinist are joined by a quintet of musicians from the Camerata de Bourgogne under producer and arranger Henri Agnel.
Télérama FFFF award, France Presented at the Festival d'Avignon, France
This work has its roots in the pure Fadista tradition. Most of the texts were written by popular writers. The Fados were recorded in uncut takes with traditional 50-years old valve microphones. Carlos Gonçalves, the great composer and accompanist of the last part of Amália's career, contributed two previously unrecorded works and was also music director for this album. Ritual was launched with a concert at the prestigious Festival d'Avignon in France. This was the first time a concert of sung music took place in the legendary Cour d'Honneur of the Palais des Papes.
This is an encounter of traditional and contemporary Fado. Maria João Pires accompanies Mísia from the piano for one Fado. This was the first time the famous pianist worked on a Fado project. The concept "Diagonal" is clearly visible in the presence of three styles, three proposals realating to the Portuguese Guitar.
Three songs of the album were used for the sound track of the film "Passionata" (Dan Ireland, USA) and one song was used by choreographer Bill T. Jones for his work.
Silver Disc, Portugal. Choc de la Musique award, France Presented at the Café de la Danse, Paris
This is the first conceptual album of traditional Fado and Poetry. It was released by Erato Disques (Warner Music). Distributed in over 60 countries, more than 250 000 copies were sold. In Portugal it received a Silver Record and was put amongst the 100 best records of the 20th Century by the daily paper Púbilco. For the first time a recording of Fado music received a "Choc" award by the French magazine Le Monde de la Musique. Also a world-premiere is the specific sound of Fado in "Garras dos Sentidos" combining the accordion, violin and piano and Agustina Bessa-Luís contributed for the first time a poem especially written for Fado.
This album was chosen as one of the best albums of the year by l'Express, Libération and Le Monde and was awarded with the "Grand Prix du Disques de l'Académie Charles Cros. (previously only awarded to the record Com Que Voz by Amália Rodrigues). Once again Mísia broke new ground combining for the first time on a Fado record the piano (Carlos Azevedo) with the Portuguese guitar (Ricardo Rocha). Also for the first time the music and poetry of Sílvio Rodrigues are sung accompanied by a Portuguese guitar.
The album was released by BMG Portugal and also distributed in Japan, South Korea and Spain where Mísia already regularly performed during this time. For the first time the work of António Lobo Antunes is sung in a Fado. Two further premieres are a chanson by Jacques Brel and the classic "As Time Goes By" recorded with the Portuguese Guitar.
